ABOUT ME

“I find my work speaks louder than my words and illustration has always been my platform to voice concerns I cannot project in person.”

My name is Carl and I am an illustrator based in Cape Town, a city known for it’s picturesque locations, winelands, beautiful beaches and ever-expanding art community.

I graduated from the Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, a small coastal city surrounded in Cacadu hills. It was home for nearly 15 years and it is here I obtained a Bachelors of Technology specialising in Illustration.

I enjoy filling my sketchbooks with beasts of all shapes and sizes – and people too. I believe in the power of visual storytelling and throughout my student years found my voice with pen on paper, although I have fallen deeply in love with digital illustration as a new medium.

Since I was a child, fantasy and science fiction has fuelled my imagination for illustrating the obscure. I discovered Anime at a young age and would draw my own creations and even pick apart cartoons to make their stories everlasting.

I think storytelling and fiction will always be a driving force for my work. My deep admiration and respect for nature and animals keeps me grounded and I hope to one day, as an artist, have a great enough impact that I can improve the relationship art has with nature and use my work as visual activism.
